„Your machine drives us on”, AS inspires the papermaker exhibition in Wiesbaden with a host of novelties

13. Juli 2010

The employees of AS come up with something new every time. This was also obvious at the fair Zellcheming in Wiesbaden this year. The stand of the AS Drives & Services GmbH always had a crowd and a crowd of people attracts even more people.

The booth of AS was everytime well frequented

The stand concept of the previous year was extraordinary. But Gerd Kaspari, Managing Director of AS, wanted to top it and announced: “We want to have the most attractive stand and with the top team present the most innovative products!” Then he set off a firework of ideas. “After all, we want to take full advantage of the new location of the stand directly left of the entrance in the first hall.”

AS Group again awarded!

19. Januar 2010

Minister of Innovation Prof. Andreas Pinkwart (l) and the chairman of the ZENIT e. V., Dr. Otmar Schuster (r), had fun when Mr. Gerd Kaspari, Managing Director of the AS Group, brought along his children Tom and Josefina to the award. Gerd Kaspari added: “They should know why daddy is rare at home.”

Within the Innovationspreis of the network ZENIT e. V. the Minister of Innovation of the country North Rhine-Westphalia, Prof. Andreas Pinkwart, honored the 1st of December 2009 the AS Group for its latest innovation - the FlexoDrive®.
The new development - the FlexoDrive® - stands for a quantum leap for AS. Based on the company size and the budget for research and development, which is only a fractional amount of that which the “bigger” competitors have on their disposal, it was very brave to handle such a complex subject like this with the direct drive.
“For this project it was important for us to develop the complete direct drive by ourselves”, explained Gerd Kaspari, Managing Director of the AS Group. “That is the only way to create a motor which meets the demands and the requirements of the customers.”

The FlexoDrive® has a special design which allows to conduct a steam- and condensate-system. Due to that it is possible to mount the motor on the operating side as well as on the driving side. Compared to common direct drive solutions the FlexoDrive® does not disturb the operation process. Furthermore a special flat design allows the installation within the insulation cover, without any complex modifications.

AS again gets the unlimited SCC-Certificate

4. Januar 2010

SCC stands for Safety-Certificate-Contractor. This Certificate confirms again that the AS Group established a safety system on high standard which is actively implemented. With the certification all demands regarding (job-) safety and protection of the health and environment are respected as well.

For AS are the rules are particularly important for

  • Maintenance jobs on production facilities (e.g. power plants) as well as
  • New buildings and rebuildings of production assets (e.g. paper machines)

Therefore the AS staff gets regular trainings and the so called “toolbox-meetings” for safety, healthy and environmental protection. In this way everybody gets all the important information for a danger-free operation. Working safety conform is getting naturally.

AS itself sets high standards regarding safety and wants to be sure that the employees are aware of the rules. Not least, the staff is the most important factor of the value adding process. AS wants to avoid an absence due to injury. As a result there is a extreme low accident rate that converged against zero.

System supplier for machine speed increase and efficiency

15. Dezember 2009

Recurring problems with the existing chain drive were the reason for the modification of the existing chain drive in PM 3 at Arjo Wiggins Virginal Corporation in Belgium. Extremely high repair and maintenance expenses in connection with increased safety risk in an operating machine led to the decision to change to an alternative drive.

pinions-of-the-old-chain-drive-the-chain-is-allready-dismountedOriginally, the manufacturer of special paper operated his machine via chain. The drive in question was a form-locking drive which caused many problems: one motor drives one dryer group. The power transmission is effected via a chain which turns all drying cylinders via chain pinions. The chain as well as all chain wheels, intermediate wheels and guide wheels are placed in a closed housing. Only by eyeholes you can have a look into the nearly hermetically locked system. If the chain tears, breaks or jumps off the chain pinions, this leads automatically to enormous repair costs. This problem appeared in the PM 3, in the second up to the fifth pre-dryer-group, several times and could only be repaired during a long down time. First of all the breaking points of the chain had to be localised and this was a difficult procedure due to the housing location. Afterwards the chain which had been torn off had to be installed in once again. This is not an easy undertaking as the chain weighed several kilos.

‘Silent Drive’!

23. November 2009

In 1989 the technical paper “silent dryer drive concept for paper machines” was published in the USA by Joseph G. Miller, Product Manager Drives of the Beloit Corporation. According to the American definition the term is split into two different processes: ‘silent felt roll drive’ and ‘silent dryer drive’. If someone uses the term ‘silent drive’ today he usually means the ’silent felt roll drive’ resp. the guide roller drive.

Within the last few years the ’silent felt roll drive’ approach has fallen out of favour completely in Germany. Nevertheless these systems are still heavily utilized e. g. in Southern Europe. This is due to the fact that local manufactures only have a good command of ‘silent felt roll drive’ systems, as at first glance it seems to be less expensive or the maintenance engineers can shift their problems to the production.

lubriflex-mit-infotafel-im-werk-varel24

Ten years ago Klaus Hortz started working with the AS-Group and therefore oil-lubrication systems became an issue for AS. In the first five years conventional lubrication systems were built. Characteristics: Large oil volume, thick walls, heavy submerged pumps, poor accessibility, etc. 2002 a new development was realized. Main objective: short times of circulation and better degassing. Result: The oil-lubrication system “Lubriflex®!”

In March 2009 a rebuild took place in the company Varel GmbH & Co. KG which produces paper and board. The papermakers decided to replace the old MG cylinder at the KM2. At this position 8 further drying cylinders should be mounted to dehumidify the board faster. The company AS Antriebstechnik & Service GmbH got the order to deliver the new lubrication technology for the new drying cylinders.
On Christmas 2008 the MG cylinder was dismounted. To avoid a needless standstill of the production, the board web was redirected via the guide rolls. Subsequently there followed some smaller standstills when the 8 new drying cylinders were mounted.
The machine had not be stopped for the installation of the lubrication technique of AS. Previously all installation works had been carried out which could be executed at a running machine. The machine had only to be stopped for the connection of the new lubrication technique to the oil circulation via a “plug & play process”.
